Folk Music and Tales from "The Seven Seas"
Pørtner's Komplot is a folk music quartet with a different approach. The music is old material from peripheral areas of Denmark interpreted in new patterns for listening. The performance is combined with exciting tales about the origin of the tunes. The sound is acoustic folk music inspired by rock, jazz, and classical music, and the aim is to play concerts with a strong atmosphere expressed by both seriousity and a good laugh and interaction with the audience.
Pørtners Komplot was founded in 2005 to record a CD with music from the Reventlow Collection 1799. It turned out to be a very strong constellation of musicians, so the quartet decided to continue working together. In 2009 Pørtners Komplot began a new project with ancient music from an old, worn, handwritten tune book from Vendsyssel (North Jutland).

The Crew
Astrid Pørtner Nielsen - violin. Astrid Pørtner, who started Pørtners Komplot in 2005, grew up with traditional folk music and dance on the beet fields of Lolland. Her playing is full of energy and matches her fiery spirit and determination. Astrid also conducts the Højreby folk music group.
Frey Thyrré Klarskov - box accordeon, guitar etc. Frey Thyrré Klarskov is known for his solid Danish melodeon playing, and has long experience of teaching folk music. As well as playing the melodeon Frey also performs as a singer and guitarist. He conducts the folk group Fionia and is a brilliant composer. He also enjoys working in theatre.
Johan Toftegaard Knudsen - saxophones, piano, clarinet. Johan Toftegaard Knudsen is a saxophone, piano, and clarinet player. He graduated from the rhythmic department of The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, summer 2009, and over the years he has written music for both small and big ensembles, including Klüver’s Big Band. Johan adds interesting elements to the music on instruments that are not typical in the Danish folk tradition. Furthermore he plays in the funk band Sunstroke PM and in Langtbortistan with the Bulgarian conductor Mikael Deltchev.
Nicolaj Frederik Wamberg - double bass, violin. Nicolaj Frederik Wamberg is a double bass player and fiddler. He is behind many of the arrangements on the ’Oldefar på Tour’ CD. Nicolaj is known for his groovy bass playing inspired by his love for Celtic and Hungarian folk music. Nicolaj has worked as a teacher at the music boarding school in Humble and as an instructor in folk dance at private and corporate parties. Just like Frey, he has performed a lot in theatre projects and writes his own music.
